Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible for placement at HP?
Any person, who is a veteran in good standing, who has a
psychiatric disability and may be in danger of homelessness.
What types of accommodations are offered?
Single or double rooms in the main house or group home. The
Cooperative Apartment Program offers one bedroom and two bedroom
apartments.
What are some of the requirements to live at HP?
Veterans must be willing to maintain sobriety and medical
compliance. People with a history of aggressive or abusive
behavior, fire setting or sexually inappropriate behavior or
offenses are not eligible for placement. We are a community
program and therefore feel an obligation to the community at
large, to not put anyone at risk. We do not discriminate on the
basis of race, creed, sexual orientation or political
persuasion.
What is medical compliance?
Our primary concern is with health and safety. An example of
medical compliance would be, if you fell down and broke your
leg, we would expect you to seek medical attention and follow
the recommendations of medical personal. Similarly, we would
expect you to follow the recommendations of your treatment team
in terms of mental health.
Does HP provide treatment and/or counseling?
No. HP is not a treatment modality and we specifically do not
provide treatment. Treatment is provided by outside resources.
We simply try to provide the additional supports for maintaining
stable housing.
How much does it cost to live at HP?
The VA has guidelines for rates, however HP evaluates each
veteran’s ability to pay on a case-by-case basis. HP does offer
25% of its beds at a reduced rate.
Does HP offer a sober environment?
Yes, all residents must maintain sobriety. Veterans who are
newly sober often relapse, causing much disruption for those
veterans currently succeeding in their recovery. Therefore, we
prefer residents to have a significant track record of sobriety
under their belt, before being placed at HP. This is vital to
our current residents continued success in this area. However, a
high percentage of our residents are dually diagnosed.
What does dually diagnosed mean?
This is a term indicating that in addition to a mental health
diagnosis, the veteran may also have been diagnosed with a
substance abuse problem.
How long can I live at HP?
HP can be utilized as transitional or permanent housing.
Veterans can stay as long as they like providing they are
compliant with program expectations and the program is able to
meet their needs within the model provided.
